The Kathmandu Valley
Steeped in history, the emerald-green Kathmandu Valley is ringed by the majestic snow-capped Himalaya and lies along an old trade route between Tibet and India. Inhabited since 300 BC, this charming valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and comprises three royal cities: Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur.
At the heart of each city is a bustling Durbar Square (Palace Square) with cobblestone streets, exquisitely carved wooden pagodas, and palace structures showcasing the evolution of royal and religious art and architecture. While there are similarities between the three Durbar Squares, a guided visit will ensure you see the best of each historic city and offers a superb cultural immersion into Nepal’s culture. Kathmandu occupies much of this valley and is the political as well as commercial capital of Nepal.
To the southeast of Kathmandu, Patan lies across the Bagmati River and is the oldest of the three royal cities in the Valley. Also known as Lalitpur, meaning ‘City of Beauty’, Patan has its own distinct identity and is known for its exquisite metalwork. Patan has a relaxed atmosphere, and while its Durbar Square is relatively smaller than that of Kathmandu, it is less touristy, and a stroll around this charming town will offer visitors a unique opportunity to observe craftsmen employ a centuries-old traditional metalworking technique called repousse as well as visit the unique terracotta shrine of Maha Buddha, designed to resemble the Mahabodhi Temple at Bodh Gaya in India.
The well-preserved royal city of Bhaktapur lies to the east of Kathmandu, and whilst it is only a short drive away, this town has a timeless feel and medieval atmosphere.
Beyond Bhaktapur, the popular hill stations of Nagarkot and Dhulikhel are set amongst forested hills and are excellent bases from which you can explore the Himalayan countryside on foot as well as enjoy the incredible views as the sun rises over the mighty Himalaya.
