Jordanian Wildlife Reserves
Jordan’s eastern desert is a major draw for wildlife enthusiasts who come to observe the migratory birds and spy out the local fauna – including the graceful Arabian oryx – in its natural habitat. Azraq Wetland Reserve’s diverse ecosystem is a haven for migratory birds, while Shaumari Wildlife Reserve offers glimpses of Arabian wildlife in a protected habitat in Jordan. The best time for bird watching is between December and April. Flocks of raptors arrive in May.
Azraq’s pools and marshes have long been a crucial stop for migratory birds. The Azraq Wetlands Reserve was established in 1978 and covers 12 sq. km. Some 300 species of resident and migratory birds use the oasis for their winter migration, including hoopoe lark, desert finch, marsh harrier, ruff, the little stint and the little ringed plover. Several birds of prey, such as Montagu’s harrier and the European honey buzzard, also break their journeys in Azraq. Two trails take guests through the Azraq Wetlands Reserve: the 1.5km Marsh trail and the longer 3.5km Water Buffalo trail that combines both wet and dry areas of the reserve.
Nearby, the 22 sq. km Shaumari Wildlife Reserve was established in 1975 as a breeding centre for endangered or locally extinct wildlife and is now home to some of the rarest species in the Middle East. Arabian oryx, Persian onagers (an Asian wild ass), ostrich, and gazelles now thrive in Jordan’s eastern desert. The Shaumari Wildlife Reserve experience begins at the well-presented Visitors’ Centre before proceeding through the breeding enclosures and heading out into the reserve on foot or on one of the two guided Oryx Safari jeep tours (1 hour or 3 to 4 hours). During the tour, you’ll learn about Shaumari’s unusual desert habitats and conservation history. From an initial population of eleven, the number of Arabian Oryx at Shuamari has increased to a herd of around two hundred animals. Please note that sightings cannot be guaranteed.
