Andaman Islands

Isolated and stunningly beautiful, the Andaman Islands are a paradise of picture-postcard sun-kissed beaches, pristine blue waters, green forest cover, and a wealth of marine life. A visit to the Andaman Islands is perfect if you want a rustic Robinson Crusoe-style experience combined with excellent snorkelling opportunities and lounging on striking palm-fringed beaches.

Comprised of 325 emerald isles – of which just 26 are inhabited – the Andaman archipelago is set in warm waters of the tropical Indian Ocean between India and Burma. Snorkelling is undoubtedly one of the most rewarding activities here, and we recommend visits to Havelock Island, South Button Island and Henry Lawrence Island, where the calm blue waters reveal healthy coral reefs and rich aquatic life. Underwater, you can spot royal angelfish, false clown anemone fish, parrotfish and Andaman lobster, among others. Another highly recommended experience is visiting the former administrative capital of Ross Island, where the overgrown crumbling colonial buildings are reclaimed by the jungle, like the famed temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Students of Indian history will also appreciate visiting Port Blair’s historic Cellular Jail, where several of India’s political leaders were detained in the lead-up to the country’s Independence in 1947.
