Tour Overview
NIMMU • LIKIR • TEMISGAM • ULLEY TOKPO • LAMAYURU • STOK
Walking across the Roof of the World is a unique Himalayan experience. Our walking in Ladakh private tour is accompanied by an experienced guide. It combines day hikes of easy and moderate difficulty levels in the lower Indus Valley with treks through the alluring moonscape near Lamayuru.
Accommodation is in simple yet comfortable mountain lodges with ensuite bathrooms, proper beds and running hot water. The core part of the Walking in Ladakh itinerary is an adaptation of the classic Likir to Temisgam trek. It features a four-day hike through the fertile, isolated villages that dot the glorious Sham Valley. Each day combines four to five hours of walking with short transfers between your lodge and the trailhead.
En route, you will be able to gain an insight into the everyday life of Ladakhis and enjoy Ladakh’s breathtaking landscape of snow-capped mountains, barren hillsides and oasis-like green valleys. This private tour begins with a night in Delhi, followed by a scenic flight to Leh, where your walking in Ladakh holiday starts with three nights in the village of Nimmu. Acclimatise to Ladakh’s high altitude with introductory walks to the 16th-century Basgo Fort and pretty Phyang village that takes you through terraced fields of barley, wheat and corn. Next, drive to the picturesque Likir village and visit the sacred Likir monastery before setting off on your inspiring trek across Sham Valley.
Over the next four days, discover Lamayuru’s arid moonscape; walk up the spectacular Ulleh Tokpo gorge to the 19th-century Rizdong monastery – affectionately called ‘the paradise for meditation’; soak up the spectacular views of the Indus Valley whilst crossing the Mebtak La pass (3,750m) to the beautiful village of Ang, and hike across fruit orchards and barley fields to the prosperous village of Temisgam (3,200m) – the 15th-century capital of Ladakh.
Along the way, enjoy picnic lunches by the Indus River, visit local schools, monasteries, and markets and interact with monks and villagers to understand their way of life. Then, return to the village of Stok near Leh, where your walking in Ladakh tour concludes with 2 nights in a traditional village house and a morning’s trek to the village of Changma.
