Tour Overview
KOLKATA • KOHIMA
Nagaland’s unabashedly colourful Hornbill festival is the centrepiece of this private tour to India’s ‘forgotten’ North Eastern province of Nagaland. Dubbed the mother of all festivals in Nagaland, this annual festival is celebrated over 10 days (from 1st December to 10th December). It brings together 16 different Naga tribes, including the notorious Konyak tribe – the head hunters of Nagaland.
On this privately chauffeured tour, gain a superb insight into Naga culture, where pride is a matter of life and death and where feared warrior tribes, even today, practice animism. As the beating of log drums and a strident war cry echo amongst the hills of Kohima, head out to the open-air theatre and experience the lively Hornbill festival up close. Witness fascinating tribal performances, including the high-energy bamboo dance by the Konyak tribe, as Naga men and women clad in their resplendent, traditional attire and extraordinary headgear featuring tusks of wild boars, bear skin as well as hornbill feathers take immense pride in presenting their diverse art forms.
While Naga tribal music and dance take centre stage during the day, the atmosphere is equally lively after sunset as budding artists and bands from around the country enthral visitors with all kinds of contemporary music. Other highlights include meeting and interacting with Angami tribal elders, sampling their local cuisine, participating alongside local tribes in the traditional chilli eating contest, and visiting Kohima’s haunting World War II cemetery. The Hornbill festival tour starts and finishes at Calcutta, a vibrant hub of Bengali culture and home to some of the finest Raj architecture in the Indian subcontinent.
