Tour Overview
BATUMI • PROMETHEUS CAVE • TSKALTUBO • MARTVILI CANYON • OKATSE CANYON • ZUGDIDI • SVANETI • SHEKVETILI, BLACK SEA
The Georgia Family Holiday is an adventure through the gorges, caves, and mountains of western Georgia, a pristine and stunningly beautiful part of the southern Caucasus perhaps best known for the otherworldly medieval tower houses and the wild ‘Lord of the Rings-style’ scenery of remote Svaneti.
This privately guided and chauffeured tour, which includes three nights in Svaneti, will enable you to experience the magical mountain landscapes of one of Georgia’s most traditional regions. The mighty snow-capped peaks of the Greater Caucasus soar to over 5,000 metres.
Before climbing up into the Caucasus, you’ll enjoy exploring the scenic lush sub-tropical hills of Imereti, where activities include paddling along the jade-coloured Abasha River, walking above the tree-tops along the Okatse Canyon’s thrilling ‘skywalk’, and riding on an underground river through the imaginatively lit Prometheus Cave.
The Georgia family holiday begins and ends with pool time on the eastern shore of the Black Sea coast. Two nights in the balmy resort of Batumi at the start of the trip will enable you to enjoy the city’s bright lights, cycle along the attractive seafront promenade, and sample its mouth-watering restaurants. Then, following your adventures, the Georgia family holiday concludes with R&R at a family-friendly seaside resort in Shekvetili, where the extensive facilities include an aqua park, zip line, infinity-edge pool, and spa.

Day 2 Batumi
Late this morning, you’ll be met by your guide and set off on a relaxed morning’s cycle ride along Batumi’s attractive Black Sea seafront will reveal the city’s distinctive contemporary architecture, including the Georgian Alphabet Tower and the nine-metre-tall rotating metal sculpture known as ‘Ali and Nino’. Then, following a traditional Adjaran lunch, delve into Old Batumi on foot, where the historical backstreets are scattered with ornate 19th-century architecture that tells of the days when the city was an oil boom town.
Day 3 Prometheus Cave, arrive in Tskaltubo
Drive inland through the fertile plains of western Georgia to the Prometheus Cave, one of the country’s great natural highlights. Within the 70 million-year-old cave the spectacularly lit stalactites and stalagmites create a fabulous underground world that is complete with a petrified waterfall, an underground lake, and a vast boulder to which it is said that the Titan Prometheus was chained. The Prometheus cave tour has a spectacular conclusion travelling by boat on an underground river, after which you’ll be driven the short distance to the once-famous spa town of Tskaltubo.
ACCOMMODATION (2 nights)
Sapphire: Tskaltubo Plaza Hotel (2 Deluxe Rooms)
Diamond: Tskaltubo Plaza Hotel (2 Superior Deluxe rooms)
Day 4 Martvilli & Okatse Canyons
Natural beauty and fun await on today’s excursion into the lush hills of Imereti. The adventure begins at the Martvili Canyon, one of the region’s great natural attractions, where you will set off along a scenic circular 700-metre hiking trail and take a short boat trip on the blue-green Abasha River. Nearby, at the Okatse Canyon, the great highlight is the 780-metre panoramic ‘skywalk’. The day’s sightseeing concludes with a visit to the Kinchkha waterfall, with its spectacular three-step 88-metre cascade down a limestone cliff.
Day 5 Gelati Monastery, Zugdidi, arrive in Mestia (Svaneti)
Start the day’s sightseeing with a visit to the wonderfully positioned Gelati Monastery before continuing to Mestia in Georgia’s remote region of Svaneti. En route to the mountains, stop in the bustling city of Zugdidi to visit Dadiani Palace, a fine example of 19th-century Georgian architecture that has now been converted into a museum. Continue to Mestia, journeying through increasingly magnificent scenery along the way.
ACCOMMODATION (3 nights)
Sapphire: Bapsha Guesthouse (2 Deluxe Balcony Rooms)
Diamond: Hotel Gistola (2 Suites)
Day 6 Shdugra Waterfall Hike
Hiking to Shdugra waterfall (5 hours) is one of the best ways to experience the pristine expanse of the Svaneti region. The waterfall is reached via a well-defined trail starting in Mazeri village that leads you through the mountains to a viewpoint overlooking Georgia’s tallest waterfall and the High Caucasus. The hike is of easy to moderate difficulty, but the going is steep in places and thus requires a good level of fitness. The athletic may wish to extend this hike and continue to the Ushba glacier, a challenging hike with an additional 600m climb.
Note: For those who do not wish to hike, there is the option to visit the Svaneti History and Ethnography Museum and the nearby hamlet of Latali. Another highlight is riding the cable car to the top of the Zuruldi range. There is a leisurely stroll at the top of the ridge and breathtaking views in all directions.
Day 7 Ushguli
A bumpy yet highly scenic single track leads to one of Svaneti’s most enchanting villages, the UNESCO World Heritage-listed settlement of Ushguli. On arrival, there will be the opportunity to view the unique stone towers for which the region is renowned before hiking to the Church of the Virgin Mary (Lamaria), from where the surrounding vistas are even more incredible. After ample time for exploration, return to Mestia via the same route.
Day 8 Arrive in Shekvetili (Black Sea)
Descend through the mountains of the Greater Caucasus to the tranquil shores of Shekvetili on the eastern Black Sea coast. After check-in, the remainder of the day will be at leisure.
