Tour Overview
KOLKATA • SERAMPORE • CHANDANNAGAR • MURSHIDABAD • RAJBARI BAWALI
The Colonial Bengal tour is an off-the-beaten-track private journey that will take you overland from Calcutta to the almost-forgotten towns of Serampore, Chandannagar and Murshidabad on the Hooghly River to reveal West Bengal’s often-overlooked colonial history.
Exploring these outposts of the Mughal, British, French, Dutch and Danish empires was previously only possible by boat – but can now be undertaken by land too – while staying in attractive historic buildings converted into heritage hotels. This relaxed tour starts in Calcutta, the capital of British India until 1910, where you’ll discover iconic relics of the Raj, including the magnificent Governor’s House, the Victoria Memorial (Taj of the Raj) and the Charnock Mausoleum, as well as enjoy tea at the exclusive Tollygunge Club (founded 1895).
Then, follow in the footsteps of the European factors (merchants) and soldiers as you travel north along the Grand Trunk Road towards Murshidabad, founded by Emperor Akbar and became renowned as one of Bengal’s most glamorous cities in the 18th century. Along the way, you will explore Serampore, an 18th-century Danish trading outpost; visit Chinsurah, where the Dutch merchants settled in the 17th century to trade silk, muslin, indigo, tea and spices produced here; see the decisive battlefield of Plassey, where Robert Clive faced the Nawab of Bengal and his French allies in 1757; and set off on a cycle rickshaw tour through Chandannagar, which still retains its distinctive French character, and was a French colony until 1952.
The Colonial Bengal tour then concludes in style with a three-night stay at the Rajbari Bawali, a grand 300-year-old ‘pile’ located within the Budge Budge subdivision of the 24 Parganas, from where you’ll be able to discover the rural Bengali and relive the leisured lifestyle its former Zamindari owners.
