Tour Overview
KOLKATA • BHUBANESHWAR • PURI • CHILIKA LAKE • DHENKANAL • RAJBARI BAWALI
The Classic Odisha tour is perfect for the adventurous traveller looking to discover this culturally rich, strikingly beautiful, overlooked eastern Indian province. Odisha (formerly Orissa) has played a pivotal role in shaping the history of the Indian subcontinent.
On this privately guided Odisha tour, you’ll delve into the region’s documented history that dates back to the epic battle of Kalinga in 261 BC; discover magnificent temples that stand out for their splendid architecture, spot rare migratory birds, and visit thriving artisan villages.
Your Classic Odisha tour begins in Kolkata (Calcutta), from where you’ll fly to Bhubaneshwar in Odisha to visit the Ashokan period ruins, marvel at the 2000-year-old Udayagiri and Kandagiri caves, and admire the splendid 11th-century Lingaraj and Mukteshwar temples. Then, continue to Puri, Odisha’s spiritual capital, where a cycle rickshaw ride along the bustling Grand Road will allow you to soak up the atmosphere around the celebrated Lord Jagannath temple before proceeding to the iconic Sun Temple at Konark.
Next, drive inland to Chilika Lake, an oasis home to nearly 160 species of birds and the largest wintering ground for migratory birds in the Indian subcontinent. Then, spend two nights at the modest yet character-rich Dhenkanal Palace, which is a convenient base for discovering the weaving village of Nuapatna and the metal casting of Dokra. Concluding the Classic Odisha tour is a stay at Rajbari Bawali, a grand 19th-century Nabob’s residence in rural Bengal.
