A luxury long weekend in Beirut, the former Paris of the East, is a Middle Eastern experience like no other. From the amazing culinary scene in Beirut to the pretty fishing villages, stunning natural beauty of the mountains, well-preserved Roman sites, imposing Crusader castles, bustling traditional souqs and fashionable boutiques, Lebanon is a land of great variety and diversity – a unique microcosm of the eastern Mediterranean. Living in Lebanon has been likened to drinking champagne on the edge of a volcano.

On this privately guided long weekend in Beirut, you’ll have ample opportunity to experience first-hand why this – one of the smallest countries in the Middle East – is also one of its most exciting secrets.

Day 2 Beirut and Byblos

Byblos (harbour) Lebanon DT 69780835

This morning, explore Beirut. The Lebanese capital, once known as the ‘Paris of the East’, was, until the early 90s, more synonymous with war and conflict. Your visit will include a visit to the wonderful National Museum, the scenic landmark of Pigeon Rocks and the Downtown area that was once split by the infamous Green Line. Then, drive up the coast to Byblos for lunch by the pretty fishing harbour. This afternoon, wander through the attractive medieval lanes of old Byblos and visit the UNESCO World Heritage archaeological site with its Crusader castle and ruins that date back to the dawn of Phoenician civilisation.

Day 3 Sidon, Beiteddine, Barouk Cedars, Deir Al Qamar

Travel south to the maritime city of Sidon, one of the great trading entrepots of early antiquity. On arrival, visit the 13th-century Crusader Sea Castle, wander through the bustling medieval maze-like lanes of the covered souq, and visit the Dibeen Palace. Next, drive up through the thickly wooded slopes of the Chouf mountains to see the beautiful late 18th-century Beiteddine Palace, then take a short walk through the Cedar scented forests of Barouk before visiting the picturesque medieval village of Deir Al Qamar and returning to Beirut.

Day 4 Baalbek and Ksara

Baalbek Lebanon 7 © Bennetts

A scenic journey east across Mt. Lebanon will bring you to Baalbek in the Bekaa Valley. Baalbek’s ruins are considered some of the world’s most important Roman sites. The sheer scale and proportions of this UNESCO World Heritage Site never cease to impress. Amongst the site’s highlights are the Temple of Jupiter (one of the largest temples ever built) and the well-preserved and beautifully decorated Temple of Bacchus. Break your return to Beirut at Ksara, where you will sample some of Lebanon’s famous wines.

Day 5 Farewell to Lebanon

Bekaa Valley (Niha. Roman Lower Great Temple) Lebanon DT 93010498

Transfer to Beirut International Airport and check in for your onward flight.
