Tour Overview
CAIRO • ALEXANDRIA • ASWAN • NILE CRUISE KOM OMBO • EDFU • LUXOR
The Alexandria and Nile Cruise holiday reunites Alexandria, the Mediterranean city where classical Greek learning and culture reached its apogee, with the magnificent Egyptian pharaonic treasures lying between Cairo and Aswan, to deliver a more complete picture of ancient Egyptian civilisation.
This private tour also features a Nile cruise; like the fabled Queen Cleopatra VII, who once sailed up the Nile with Julius Caesar aboard the state barge Thalamegos, you’ll also be able to behold the timeless beauty of Upper Egypt from the world’s longest river. Alexandria, the Mediterranean city founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC, holds an almost irresistible appeal to history students, yet this glory of the Hellenistic world is usually omitted from tours of Egypt.
The impact of earthquakes, invasions, and the ravages of time over the past two thousand years have certainly been cruel to Alexandria, but as the author E.M Foster wrote in 1922: ‘The “sights” of Alexandria ‘fascinate when we approach them through the past’. Visitors who delve beneath the surface of Alexandria will be thrilled to find vestiges of the city that was once the supreme beacon of classical culture, where renowned glories, including the Museion and Library, The Soma (Tomb of Alexander the Great), and ‘Pharos’ lighthouse – a Wonder of the Ancient World – once stood.
With a good guide at your side, it is almost impossible not to be captivated by the stories and images that are conjured up by Alexandria – the city where Cleopatra met Mark Antony, the mathematician Euclid developed his system of geometry, Theocritus penned his idylls, Claudius Ptolemy drew his famed map of the world, and Arius and Athanasius debated the nature of Christ.
The Alexandria and Nile Cruise holiday is an Egypt holiday with a real difference, with a visit to Alexandria making a fascinating addition that complements the many astounding wonders along the River Nile.
