19th-century converted hotel rich in character

A collection of colonial-style buildings dating from 1841, the Windamere Hotel Darjeeling started life as the ‘Ada Villa’ and then metamorphosed into a boarding house for tea planters before becoming the charming Victorian-style hotel of today. Surrounded by pine trees and perched on Observatory Hill, the hotel overlooks Darjeeling’s main promenade and, on a clear day, offers stunning views of the lush Himalayan foothills.

The hotel’s 41 rooms, cottages, and suites are divided between several bungalows that retain their colonial feel, with dark-timber furniture and original claw-foot baths. Accommodation in the original Ada Villa is intended for guests seeking a peaceful retreat and doesn’t have televisions or telephones. The Dining Room at the Windamere Darjeeling offers Indian and classic English fare and is renowned for its candlelit dinners, while the traditional afternoon tea on the lawn with scones is not to be missed. Other facilities at the Windamere Darjeeling include a massage room and a boutique.
