Charming homestay with a lakefront location
Vembanad House is a simple yet charming homestay with a stunning waterfront location in the small village of Muhamma designed to offer an immersive Keralan experience. Surrounded by the expansive Lake Vembanad on three sides and set amongst 10 acres of lush gardens, the 80-year-old Vembanad House is built in traditional Keralan style. It is ideal for those who would like to get under the skin of this beautiful region to witness first-hand the slow, unhurried pace of daily life in rural Kerala.
This idyllic, rustic-style homestay is an excellent base to explore Muhamma and the surrounding villages by bicycle; paddle a canoe through the narrow canal that snakes its way around the property; join local fishermen at sunset for an exciting evening of cast-net fishing; attend mystical prayer ceremonies at local village temples; visit local markets; sample delicious home cooked food and learn how to prepare an authentic Keralan curry from your friendly hosts.
All four spacious, air-conditioned rooms at Vembanad House are tastefully decorated using period-style furniture, come with a private sit-out offering glorious views of the serene backwaters and feature a modern ensuite bathroom with western-style loo as well as a bathtub with an overhead shower unit.
At Vembanad House, tasty, traditional Keralan meals are prepared by your warm, welcoming hosts – Sandhya and her partner Balakrishnan and guests can join them at the main dining area or opt for a private dinner in the garden. The rural location of this homestay means it suffers from an erratic electricity supply. While generators provide backup power in the mornings and evenings, and all rooms are equipped with solar lamps, torchlights and candles, please be prepared for power outages. Similarly, whilst the ensuite bathrooms have hot water geysers, they rely on solar power; hence, hot water may take a few minutes to reach your tap. Other facilities include a communal living room with a selection of books on Kerala.
