Converted Newari townhouse with charm and character

Originally a Newari townhouse, The Old Inn Bandipur is a modest guesthouse converted with character. Perched high above the Trisuli Valley, this painstakingly restored mansion retains its old-world charm.

It is set within the main square in Old Bandipur, where no motorised vehicles are allowed, even today.

With traditional carved doors, shuttered windows, exposed beams, low-ceilinged corridors, wooden staircases, tiled floors and local artwork, this is a reasonably large and rambling, maze-like property that showcases many of its original features and has a relaxed, homespun atmosphere.

The simply furnished rooms are tastefully decorated in traditional Nepali style. No two rooms are of the same size or décor, and it must be noted that as this is an old mansion, the rooms are somewhat compact. While rooms in the new wing come with a private ensuite bathroom (more like a snug, functional wet room with a western-style loo and a shower), rooms in the old wing have a communal toilet and shower on each floor, which rooms share.

Also, whilst all rooms in the new wing overlook the square, some rooms in the old wing do not have any windows, and others overlook the courtyard. Guests can choose Continental or traditional Nepali food for breakfast, but lunches and dinners are usually local Newari-style cuisine. Meals are typically served in the main dining room, but if weather permits, guests can dine on the roof-top terrace, which offers stunning views of the Annapurna mountain range. Whilst there is no bar, beer and wine are served.

With cosy nooks, comfortable chairs and a large open fire lit on cold winter evenings, this modest hotel offers guests plenty of space to relax and appreciate the peaceful atmosphere. Guests staying at this hotel must be aware that the rooms are not air-conditioned, and the friendly staff will provide an electric blanket during winter.

Despite the lack of facilities, this hotel is perfect for those looking to go beyond the usual tourist trail and has a convenient location between Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan.

Activities on offer include a village walk and an easy-to-moderate hike to the Magar village of Ramkot, showcasing local farming methods and stunning views.

The 4-hour walk to the Siddha Cave is worth considering to see Nepal’s largest cave.
