The Famous Farm

The Famous Farm is a simple, rustic-style, rural retreat with charm and character and is an excellent base to discover the small village of Nuwakot in the heart of Nepal. Perched on a hill, this traditional Newari-style townhouse was built over 150 years ago and was painstakingly restored and converted into a simple, charming, heritage-style organic farmhouse in 2006.

The 13 individually decorated, simply furnished rooms are housed in three farmhouse buildings set around an open courtyard surrounded by lush gardens. With low ceilings and exquisite woodwork, all rooms showcase traditional Newari style design and layout, and all but two rooms feature a small ensuite bathroom.

It must be noted that the power supply is somewhat erratic in rural Nepal, and while guests are provided with a torch, hot water can be an issue if the power supply is down. This delightful hotel sits in a 3-acre terraced garden, and guests can join the staff to pick vegetables and herbs, which the resident chef uses to prepare delicious Nepali and a small selection of Western cuisine.

Guests wanting to master their culinary skills are welcome to assist the chef. At the Famous Farm, meals are usually served in the open courtyard, but there is a cosy dining room for cooler winter nights and a bar that serves beer and wine.

The Famous Farm is an excellent base for visiting the Nuwakot Palace and the old Bazaar and for village walks through the beautiful countryside.

Given its natural, rural setting, guests should be aware that chickens and geese roam freely around the gardens at the Famous Farm, meaning it is best to retire early and wake up just before dawn.
