Converted 19th-century royal residence
Stok Palace Heritage Hotel is an 1820 royal residence located 15km outside Leh. It has been sympathetically converted into a small six-bedroom heritage hotel in the rugged and beautiful Indus Valley (Singey Sangpo).
Stok Palace Heritage Hotel showcases the exquisite work of the 19th century Ladakhi artisans, from the murals and rugs to the brightly painted woodwork, whilst the décor echoes the rich character of the region and vividly captures the royal family’s lifestyle. No two individually designed rooms are the same size, but all offer stunning views of the pristine natural landscape. As the seat of the former rulers of Ladakh, the main building features royal apartments and prayer chambers around interlinked courtyards and large, decorative projecting balconies. In addition to the six rooms within the main palace, Stok Palace Heritage Hotel offers four simple yet tastefully decorated heritage-style villas in a separate house set among old apricot, walnut and willow trees.
The restored Old Royal Kitchen serves traditional Ladakhi, Tibetan and Indian cuisine. Subject to weather, breakfast is served on the palace ramparts that offer spectacular views of the valley, while sumptuous lunches and dinners are served in one of the dining rooms. Guests staying at Stok Palace Heritage Hotel have privileged access to the museum and Lhakchung Temple, which are part of the Palace complex and offer a superb insight into the cultural history of Ladakh.
