Community-run eco-friendly hotel with a rural setting

Shaam-e-Sarhad (Sunset at the Border) Village Resort is a simple, eco-friendly, rustic-style hotel run by the local community and set in the village of Hodka near Bhuj. Inspired by the traditional architectural style of the region, the overriding theme is mud, and from the lobby to the dining area – everything is built of mud and beautifully decorated using locally sourced handcrafts for which this region is famed.

Accommodation at Shaam-E-Sarhad comprises simple, clean, comfortable tents and bangs (circular mud huts with sloping roofs), typical of the Banni region. All rooms are tastefully decorated with mirror work, textiles and other local crafts and feature an attached bathroom with a western-style toilet and shower with running water. Guests staying in a bhunga should be aware that the bathroom is in a separate mud building behind their bhunga.

At Shaam-E-Sarhad, home-cooked traditional Gujarati cuisine is served in the open-sided dining area overlooking a courtyard. Shaam-e-Sarhad is managed by the Hodka Endogenous Tourism Project, which strives to promote local culture and craft-based tourism for integrated rural development. Hence, it must be noted that friendly locals from the community staff the hotel, and while they are courteous and eager to meet guests’ requirements, they are not professionally trained, and service levels at Shaam-e-Sarhad are not the same as elsewhere.
