A former 14th-century pilgrims’ rest house with plenty of character
In the heart of Dattatreya Square in Bhaktapur, and originally a 14th-century pilgrims’ rest house, the Peacock Guest House is a delightful, character-rich hotel that has been superbly brought up-to-date and designed to offer a fascinating glimpse into Bhaktapur’s rich cultural heritage.
With its original handcrafted exquisite doors and windows, exposed brick walls, tranquil courtyard with a small shrine, narrow corridors, ladder-like staircases and ceilings with wooden beams, this modest hotel retains many original features.
Accommodation comprises nine rooms, but no two rooms are the same size or décor. While all rooms are comfortably furnished and feature ensuite bathrooms, it must be noted they all are relatively compact. The four Ordinary Rooms featuring slanted ceilings are at the back of the property directly under the tiled roof and are ideal for those who want some quiet and privacy, while the three Varanda Rooms that share a small balcony are relatively spacious and set overlooking the central courtyard.
The best room, though, is the Deluxe Room, which has a traditional sitting area and offers spectacular views of Dattatreya Square. At the Peacock Guest House, tasty Nepalese and Continental cuisine is served at the Mayur restaurant, whilst the Himalayan Bakery serves homemade sandwiches, waffles and coffee throughout the day. From witnessing the morning prayer ceremony at the shrine within the courtyard to observing the woodcarver at his small studio on the ground floor, this hotel is perfect for those seeking an immersive experience.
However, guests staying at the Peacock Guest House should be aware that this is not a full-fledged hotel; there are only limited facilities at this property, and as the building dates back to the 14th century, low ceilings and steep, narrow wooden stairways are a common feature.
