Exuding a unique old-world charm and character, the Swiss-managed SS Misr (“Egypt” in Arabic) offers the enticing opportunity of sailing on what was once the Royal Yacht of King Farouk II of Egypt.

The SS Misr is no longer the most luxurious vessel on the Nile, but its seven-night cruises from Luxor are unquestionably the most regal. With its sumptuous interiors full of period elegance, black and white photographs of the Egyptian Royal family, cut crystal light fixtures, and a baby grand piano, it is easy to see why onetime guest and British Prime Minister Sir John Major called the SS Misr: “The Orient Express of the Nile.” Guest accommodation is in 16 themed cabins and eight suites with a private balcony.

The air-conditioned cabins and suites have luxurious marble bathrooms with bathtubs, LCD television, tea and coffee-making facilities, a safety deposit box, a mini-bar, internet access, and floor-to-ceiling windows. Standard cabins (21 sqm) are wood-panelled and have either twin or Queen beds, while the Suites (30 sqm) have twin or King-size beds and a living area containing a stylish loveseat and chairs. A panoramic terrace offering spectacular 180-degree views of the Nile is the main feature of the two beautifully designed Panoramic suites (35 sqm).

Two smaller cabins are dedicated for single travellers (14.5 sqm). Attention to detail is evident throughout the boat, whether it’s the crystal and china used at Marasem – the SS Misr’s main restaurant – the pianist entertaining guests in the Saraya Lounge after dinner, or the scented towels that refresh guests on their return from an excursion.

The SS Misr also offers guests a classic English-style bar, a gift shop and an inviting split-level shaded Sun Deck with a plunge pool.
