L'Auberge de Tamezret

L’Auberge de Tamezret is a three-room guesthouse offering fine dining that is run by a charming husband and wife team in the quiet hilltop Berber village of Tamezret, a short drive from Matmata’s famous troglodytic houses. This centuries-old rustic Berber house has been restored to offer guests the experience of Berber living without forgoing creature comforts.

Each one of L’Auberge de Tamezret’s three cave-like ensuite guestrooms has its own charm and comes with the best linens, quality toiletries, and state-of-the-art technology. One bedroom is a large room hewn from the rock, the second has a private terrace overlooking the desert highlands, and the suite has a separate living room making it ideal for families. The building’s original architectural features, which include a garden and panoramic terrace with sun loungers, contribute significantly to its charm, but guests should be aware that they also come with a downside in the form of narrow stairs that need to be navigated and low doors that require you to duck when entering.

During the short winter season, extra blankets are required as the bedrooms are difficult to heat. Food plays an important part for all guests staying at L’Auberge de Tamezret. Every evening is a fine dining experience featuring a home-cooked six-course meal combining International and Tunisian dishes that are prepared with locally sourced ingredients.

Meals are served by your hosts at a communal table with your fellow guests – either in the cave-like dining room or on the terrace.

Many guests consider L’Auberge de Tamezret to be a destination in its own right, but it also makes a good base from which to explore southern Tunisia as it is midway between Tataouine and the Sahara.
