Charming colonial-era converted planter’s bungalow
Commanding a breathtaking view of Mt Kanchenjunga and set amongst 1,600 acres of rolling tea gardens, the delightful converted planter’s bungalows of Glenburn Tea Estate offer the chance to relive the gracious lifestyle of 19th-century British planters while providing you with a home away from home experience. Built in the 19th century by a Scottish Tea Company and later passed on to one of India’s leading tea-planting families, Glenburn’s story is interwoven with the history of tea in India.
Accommodation at Glenburn Tea Estate comprises eight rooms spread among two bungalows. The main Burra Bungalow dates back to the 19th century and offers four lovingly restored and individually decorated rooms that open out onto a veranda, while the more recently built colonial-style Water Lily Bungalow features four additional light, airy and tastefully decorated rooms with a period style furniture.
The Dining Room is part of the Burra Bungalow. It serves a range of traditional Indian, Oriental and Continental cuisine prepared using fresh herbs and vegetables from the estate’s vegetable garden. Guests usually get together in the evenings for pre-dinner drinks and dinner; however, private dining can be arranged. Your stay at Glenburn is on a full-board basis and includes all meals, snacks, soft drinks, local beers, and spirits served at lunch and dinner.
This peaceful retreat, just over an hour from Darjeeling, has two rivers running through the estate and is an excellent base for walks, soft treks with picnic lunches, rafting and fishing. There is also a simple two-bedroom log cabin overlooking the river at the bottom of the estate that is available for guests to relax during the day or stay overnight for those seeking a real escape into the wilderness.
