Historic property in traditional Bhutanese style

Guarded by a pair of mythical snow lion statues, Gangtey Palace was once the home of the Penlop (Governor) of Paro and has stunning views looking over the valley and the majestic Paro dzong.

This authentic historic property is over a hundred years old and has managed to maintain the charm and intimacy of a family home despite its conversion into a hotel. The public areas and bedrooms are filled to the rafters with beautiful Bhutanese artifacts, old painted columns, colorful rugs, and traditional furniture; whilst outside, guests can enjoy strolling through beautifully manicured lawns and visiting the on-site temple dedicated to Tsheringma, the Goddess of wealth.

It must be stated that this is not a property to consider if international comforts are a must. None of the 19 rooms at the Gangtey Palace are the same, some are quite dark and cramped, and as you would expect with an old building, the plumbing could be better. Each bedroom is decorated in a traditional Bhutanese style (which more than makes up for the lack of television) and has an ensuite bathroom with either a bathtub or shower.

A healthy set of lungs is required to climb the steep stairs leading to rooms located on higher floors. Guest facilities include a bar located in the main building and a restaurant which is reached following a short walk through the grounds.

Gangtey Palace also offers traditional hot stone baths and relaxing ayurvedic massages.
