Unique homestay within the walls of a 600-year-old fort

Fort Rampura is a 600-year-old charming rustic retreat tucked away amongst the unforgiving Chambal Ravines and was once the private residence of the Bundelkhand rulers. The rambling fortress showcases Mughal, Indian and British influences as successive rulers added to buildings. Although the fort encompasses over 100 rooms, including the Zenana Mahal (women’s quarters) – much of it is in an atmospheric state of ruin. Today, a portion of the fort is lived in by the direct descendants, and four rooms have been tastefully restored with modern ensuite bathrooms. Each of the four simply furnished rooms is individually decorated using antique handmade furniture, local artefacts, and old family photographs and is ideal for those seeking an intimate homestay experience in a rural setting.

The spacious living room adorned with hunting trophies is shared with the hosts and has a superb collection of books and an antique billiard table. Delicious home-cooked meals are served in the main dining room, and the hosts usually join the guests for drinks and dinner. Fort Rampura is an excellent base for exploring the rural countryside on a bullock cart, wandering around the weekly traditional village bazaar, and combining exhilarating treks through the Chambal Ravines with picnic lunches in the family orchard.
