Former royal hunting lodge on the Mediterranean
Overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and a stretch of golden sand, the El Salamlek Palace Hotel and Casino was built as a royal hunting lodge at the end of the 19th century in Alexandria’s attractive Montazah gardens.
The palace is sumptuously decorated with some of the original royal furnishings remaining. It offers accommodation in six ensuite and air-conditioned rooms and 14 suites, each with its own character and style. The Mawlana Suite, for example, has five rooms and a large terrace and can entertain over one hundred people, while the Dawlet El Raise Suite has two rooms and the Afandina Suite three.
Dining is offered in a choice of two restaurants, including the Al Farouk Restaurant, a room that once functioned as the office of Egypt’s last king. The Princess Cafe has an attractive outside terrace, while the piano bar is an atmospheric place to have a drink in the evenings. Guests should be aware that El Salamlek does not offer five-star service, and while undeniably atmospheric, the former royal elegance is now somewhat faded. A casino is attached to the hotel.
