Atmospheric 18th-century royal abode accessible only by boat

Chittoor Kottaram is a 300-year-old royal residence of the Raja of Cochin that has been beautifully restored and converted into a delightful retreat. From the wooden ceiling to the original floor tiles and the stained glass painting, this stately residence has been lovingly renovated under the personal supervision of Lady Helen Hamlyn and the descendants of the former royals and has regained its timeless elegance. All three individually decorated rooms at Chittoor Kottaram have modern bathrooms. They are beautifully furnished using period-style furniture and offer a window into the lifestyle of the former Maharaja of Cochin.

Chittoor Kottaram’s main dining room serves sumptuous traditional Keralan and Continental cuisine. No formal bar exists, but beer and wine are served in the gardens or the lounge. This former palace has its fair share of quaint nooks and crannies, including a meditative space next to the Ayurveda centre and an outdoor pool with traditional bathing steps that have drawn inspiration from the temple ponds seen throughout Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Guests staying at Chittoor Kottaram should know that this majestic retreat is set on the outskirts of Cochin and can only be reached by boat through a private canal.
