Amankora Thimphu Lodge

Situated in a tranquil blue-pine forest a short drive from the Bhutanese capital, Amankora Thimpu Lodge is a secluded minimalist Dzong-like retreat consisting of tall whitewashed stone buildings that are accessed through an enclosed courtyard.

Stairs lead from this point up to a dramatic combined living and dining area with wood panelling and soaring ceilings. An inviting paved outdoor dining deck is adjacent and has views of the nearby rushing stream and surrounding forest.

This spot is a wonderfully peaceful place to relax and enjoy the crisp Himalayan mountain air. Two buildings house a total of 16 spacious suites, each with a king-sized bed, banquette window seat, traditional Bukhari wood-burning stove, twin vanities, terrazzo-clad bathtub, and separate shower. Service at Amankora Thimpu is exceptional, with almost nothing being too much trouble for the staff.

The cuisine is another highlight with the talented chefs providing a choice of appetising seasonal daily set menus. The spa has three treatment rooms which offer special royal Bhutanese herbal treatments.

Guests at Amankora Thimpu can also browse through an extensive selection of books on Bhutan and the Himalaya in the Library or visit the lodge’s boutique, where high-quality, hand-picked local handicrafts can be found.

Luxury at Amankora Thimpu Lodge does come with a price tag, but it is worth bearing in mind that the tariff includes all house drinks (premium beverages are chargeable) and full board.
