The mountain villages of Oman’s Jabal Akhdar (Green Mountain) are perched precariously on the edge of sheer cliffs and command some of the most memorable views in the country.

Nizwa’s lively livestock market is a must-see for visitors to Oman. Every Friday, cattle, sheep, and goats are auctioned amidst scenes of great excitement. Men in elegant dishdashas and kuma hats and traditionally dressed women add to the timeless spectacle.

With spectacular rugged mountains and fjord-like sunken valleys, the Musandam Peninsula is one of Oman’s most scenic and least developed areas. A dhow cruise into Khor ash Sham to explore the dramatic ‘fjord’ with its incredibly sheer cliffs and crystal-clear water is a highlight.

One of Oman’s four UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the pottery centre of Bahla, is the site of a hugely impressive and recently restored fortress of pre-Islamic origin, which attests to the power and ingenuity of the medieval Banu Nebhan tribe.

Watching an enormous turtle laboriously haul its way up the beach or seeing a tiny hatchling scurry towards the sea are two of Oman’s most memorable natural spectacles. Ras al-Jinz is the most important nesting site of the green turtle in the Indian Ocean.

Ringed by an amphitheatre of jagged bare rocks and dominated by two imposing 16th-century Portuguese fortresses, Muscat is one of the Arabian Peninsula’s most fascinating and attractive cities.

The three-hour ‘Balcony’ trek in Jabal Shams and the two-hour ‘Four Villages’ hike in the Jabal Akhdar are easy-going and amongst the finest outdoor experiences in Oman.
