Tour Overview

LEH • PANGONG TSO • NUBRA VALLEY • HEMIS MONASTERY

Ladakh and the Hemis Festival is a private tour providing a thrilling introduction to the remote high-altitude Himalayan region of Ladakh that culminates amidst the theatre and spectacle of the annual Hemis Festival (tsechu) – the grandest among all the festivals celebrated in Ladakh.

This two-day celebration has been held every summer for nearly 300 years. It marks the birth anniversary of Guru Padmasambhava – the founder of Tibetan Buddhism. During the period of the festival, the courtyard of Hemis Monastery – the wealthiest amongst all of Ladakh’s monastic institutions – is the stage where monks wearing vibrant brocaded costumes with striking papier-mâché masks perform a series of splendid masked dances (known as Cham) to the accompaniment of cymbals, drums and long horns.

On the second day of the Hemis tsechu, a mummy is dissected, symbolising the destruction of the human ego and the triumph of Buddhism over ignorance and evil. Throughout the time of the tsechu, a carnival-like atmosphere pervades and attracts thousands of Ladakhi villagers who dress up in their finest clothes and throng to Hemis to enjoy the archery and polo competitions and watch the ritual mask dances – moments of pure magic.
